A teen forum on substance use will give youth from Bristol and across the state a chance to learn and discuss issues related to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
The event will be held at the Boys & Girls Club of Bristol Family Center, 255 West St., Bristol, on Thursday, March 31 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and is cosponsored by the Boys & Girls Club and Wheeler Clinic.
It is free and will provide high school students an opportunity to learn more about the many issues associated with substance use and to dialogue with their peers.
More than 200 youth from Boys & Girls Clubs and schools from across the state are expected to attend.
“This is an opportunity for youth to come together to share their unique perspectives on substance use. There are not many venues like this for young people to share their ideas, thoughts and responses to the pressures to use alcohol, tobacco and drugs,” said Judith Stonger, MA, CPS, CARC, vice president of prevention, wellness and recovery for Wheeler, according to a club press release. “If we want to support teens in staying well and making healthy choices, we have to involve youth in the conversation.”
“We are really looking forward to bringing together local teens and teens from Boys & Girls Clubs throughout Connecticut to discuss these important issues” said Jay Maia, unit director at the West Street Boys & Girls Club of Bristol Family Center, in the press release. “Substance abuse is a reality, and our young people need to hear the facts, and join the conversation.”
The event will feature an inspirational speaker and poet, small and large group dialogue among the teens, pizza and gift card door prizes. Teens attending will have the opportunity to sign a pledge to graduate on time.
